Students of many schools, which reopened today after the Durga Puja vacation, were inconvenienced due to the downpour, while some schools declared a holiday in view of the rain that had started late last night. The heavy rain disrupted normal life in several parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, where flight and train services and road transportation were affected. Some private airlines also had to cancel their flights, airport sources said.4 mm of rain over nine hours till 5..
National carrier Air India (AI) said five of its flights could not land at the airport here and were diverted to other destinations. At least 95 flights from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) were either cancelled or rescheduled.Gusty winds lash large parts of south Bengal due to the formation of a deep depression.“As an effect of the system, squally wind speed reaching 45-55 km per hour, gusting to 65 km per hour, will prevail along and off the West Bengal coast,” he added.Three pairs of EMU local trains of the Sealdah South section and four local trains of the Howrah-Bardhaman chord line in the Howrah division of the Eastern Railway (ER) had to be cancelled because of tree branches that had fallen on overhead wires, ER spokesman R.“While some domestic flights from the city had to be cancelled, some incoming flights were diverted to different airports after they failed to land here because of a gusty wind,” NSCBIA director Atul Dikshit said.
Heavy to very heavy rain ranged from 7 cm to 20 cm, while extremely heavy rain measured above 20 cm, the MeT department explained.Only one flight from Hyderabad could land at the Kolkata airport this morning, he added.Mr Das said the depression, which was centred 50 Contour screw suppliers km southeast of Kolkata Monday morning, intensified into a deep depression.“Rainfall will occur at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal during the next 48 hours,” regional Met director G. Research showed that if carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continue to rise, the giant East Antarctic ice sheet will melt."If the Antarctic ice sheet completely melted, global sea level would rise about 60 metres. It advanced and retreated many times between 34 to 35 million years ago before finally stabilising at its largest extent when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels dropped below a threshold of 600 parts per million," said Naish."We found it is vulnerable, and was much smaller the last time atmospheric carbon dioxide levels matched those predicted before Limit clamp series the end of the century," he said.
The researchers cored through 1,500 metres of sedimentary strata beneath the seafloor between October 1997 and December 1999, capturing Antarctic ice margin history from 35 to 17 million years ago. The study was published in the journal Science. With carbon dioxide levels already at 400 parts per million and predicted to go higher, this study provides valuable insights into the potential future stability of the Antarctic ice sheet. Led by Professor Simone Galeotti from the University of Urbino, the research is based on geological drill cores taken from the Ross Sea near New Zealand's Scott Base 16 years ago.Research showed that if carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere continue increasing as predicted, the giant East Antarctic ice sheet will melt.
The research also provides the first direct evidence that ice expanded all the way to the coast and out into the ocean, causing erosion of the seabed. The study was published in the journal Science. The research documents the growth of the first continent-wide ice sheet on Antarctica 34 million years ago. It's a sleeping giant," Naish said."Our study shows that this ice sheet becomes unstable and melts if carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere reach 600 parts per million levels which may be reached by the end of the century if emissions reductions targets agreed to recently in Paris are not met," said lead author Tim Naish, Director o Victoria University's Antarctic Research Centre in Australia.
"The drill cores show that the first Antarctic ice sheet was quite dynamic. Melbourne: The East Antarctic ice sheet is a 'sleeping giant' and the world is on track for massive sea level rises resulting from its melting due to the rising carbon dioxide levels, scientists warn
